Old Swan Inn

Llantwit's oldest pub has a car-park on the opposite side of the road with plenty of space and as you cross the narrow road you notice the stonework and the narrow arched windows.

You have to duck under the door jamb, if you are my height anyway, and turn left into what is essentially the dining room with a window seat and several different size tables catering for all parties which are around a wood burning stove which is regularly lit in winter. Turning right towards the bar which is smaller but also has a nice arrangement of seating areas you pass by the door to beer garden and entrance to the genuine bar area.

The beer garden has plenty of space and a split level, very nice place to relax in the sun.

The bar proper is quite small but again, very pleasant.

Back to the restaurant bar, the menus adorn every wall with the specials on the pillars to the left and right as you approach the bar, curries often. Directly in front of you is the main menu section which gives a really good selection for everyone including vegetarians, to the right is the fish menu which is excellent.

The house white is very nice and the ales are very good with two or three guests available. The usual other drinks are available.

The prices are reasonable and they serve food all day every day.

My Opinion

#############################

Last time I went here in May 2008 it was all changed, same pub but it had been taken over and the menu was overpriced and seriously lacking in choice.
One of my favourite pubs for food is now one I will not even consider recommending or going to myself.

#############################

I really love the Swan, the staff are absolutely great and the food is usually excellent, obviously this depends on what you order and I have had some disappointments there, although very few.

A friend commented that it was the only pub which gives a good vegetarian Sunday offering, a particular annoyance of his.

The seafood is the best on offer though, and I love the flavoured mash, olive especially, not usually with the fish though.
Good beer.
Good food.
Good Staff.
Good Atmosphere.

Too many bloody kids whinging and squawking when I am trying to eat my food in the afternoon, babies, teenagers, toddlers, you name the age group they have irritated me, you also get some complete cretins who are sure that their conversation is so fascinating that everyone else wants to hear about the boring little lives. Why is it that these people go to decent pubs? Parents, bugger off to Brewers Fayre and let the kids in the park, and the other idiots should be standing in wine bars surrounded by their own.

Please don't let that put you off the Swan however, it is a superb pub well worth a visit.

We have had many a relaxed afternoon at the pub but since it has been taken over we've not bothered more than a couple of times to give it a try. Our findings are that the menu is overpriced, no nice 'ordinary' food at all, no homely feel (feels more like an ' olde worlde' bar at the bay! Not for us, and a shame for Llantwit. Let the side down in our opinion
